A little under thirty years ago I had my first coaching experience. My friend was 24 and had three young children. She had left school with no qualifications at 15 and was, she felt, stuck in dead-end jobs for the rest of her life. She yearned to do something more challenging, but lacked the confidence and self-belief to take the first steps to changing things. I asked her what qualities she thought a teacher needed and when she listed them, she found to her surprise that she already possessed most of them! The only thing she really lacked was the formal qualifications. And this was the real barrier for her, as school had been an unhappy experience from which she could not wait to get out. She did not believe she could achieve the level of maths required to embark on a degree in education. She spotted an Access course advertised and set herself the goal of applying and getting on the course. We worked together to build up her confidence sufficiently to go for an interview and subsequently to start the course. It took her 3 attempts to get the maths qualification, but she didn’t give up and she has been a successful teacher for some years now! I provided support, encouragement and the objective approach that got her started, but the rest she did herself and never looked back, nor underestimated herself again.
